The trap is geography. Dubai has no single harbour: the Marina pontoons line a 7 km promenade, the superyachts have moved to Dubai Harbour, the dhows load at Al Seef and Deira on the Creek, and the Water Canal has its own stations. A Marina cruise and a Creek cruise are different products sold under one word, and the metro station on your voucher is the clearest clue which you bought.
To simply be on the water, the Roads and Transport Authority already runs boats — AED 1 across the Creek, AED 3 a hop in the Marina, AED 50 on the ferry. The arithmetic is below, with the condition RTA attaches to its sightseeing loop that nobody mentions.

The piers
Dubai has no single passenger harbour. It has a yacht marina, a superyacht harbour, two Creek dhow wharves, a canal with its own stations and a basin at Creek Harbour — and arriving early at the wrong one fixes nothing.
Dubai Marina sends out most of this page. The canal runs about 3.5 km and the Marina Walk promenade loops 7 km around it — the number that matters, because two operators can both write "Dubai Marina" and be twenty minutes apart on foot. The main pontoon cluster sits by Dubai Marina Mall and the Pier 7 tower, eight to ten minutes along the promenade from DMCC on the Red Line, or beside Marina Mall station on the tram. Smaller operators board further along Marina Walk and at Al Majara, giving directions by tower name rather than pier number.
Dubai Harbour, between Palm Jumeirah and JBR, is the newer address: the region's largest marina, with a cruise terminal alongside. The bigger superyachts moved here because the Marina's berths cannot take them, so a superyacht listing is worth reading twice.
On the Creek, Al Seef is the Bur Dubai wharf — 1.8 km of rebuilt frontage where most Creek dinner dhows board — and Deira Old Souq opposite holds the older wharfage and the RTA abra stations. The Dubai Water Canal is the third address, with nine RTA marine stations from Sheikh Zayed Road to Business Bay. Upstream past Ras Al Khor, Dubai Creek Harbour has the marina where the self-drive boats live.

The arithmetic
Dubai's public marine network is no token service. The Roads and Transport Authority runs abras, water buses and a passenger ferry over the same water the tour boats use, and its fares are the honest comparison for anyone who wants the view rather than the day.
A traditional motorised abra across the Creek — Bur Dubai to Deira Old Souq, or Dubai Old Souq to Al Sabkha — is AED 1; the air-conditioned and petrol abras are AED 2. The crossing takes under ten minutes and the stations take cash, nol, debit and credit. A whole abra chartered costs AED 60 for thirty minutes, AED 120 for an hour.
In the Marina, the BM1 water bus loops Marina Promenade, Dubai Marina Mall North, Marina Walk and Marina Terrace for AED 3 a hop, BM3 running on to Bluewaters. On the Water Canal, DC2 charges AED 2 per stop. The ferry is the sightseeing tier: Al Ghubaiba to Dubai Marina is about ninety minutes at AED 50 silver or AED 75 gold, the Water Canal legs AED 25, a family of two adults and two children AED 140.
So two people cross the Creek and return for AED 4, or ride from the old town to the Marina for AED 100. The cheapest shared yacht hour here is $18 a head, the cheapest speedboat run $41. What the AED 100 does not buy is what people book for: open water off Palm Jumeirah, the close angle on the Burj Al Arab, the swim stop, the buffet, the drinks licence.
One ferry condition is easy to miss. RTA states the circular loops from Dubai Marina — 11:30 and 16:30, past Palm Jumeirah and Atlantis — sail only with a minimum of twelve passengers. Out of season that is a real chance of standing on the pontoon holding a valid ticket.

Three bands, drawn from the fifteen listings on this page rather than a market average. Dubai's spread is unusually wide — the cheapest and dearest boats here differ by a factor of eight.
The old-town walk with an abra ride at $16 and the one-hour shared yacht at $18 anchor the bottom. Above them: an hour with drinks at $27, the half-day city tour at $34, the speedboat to Atlantis and the Burj Al Arab at $41, the abra-style cruise at $41 and a Marina dinner cruise at $42. Nothing here stops to swim.
The sunset or dinner cruise with an open bar at $58 is the band's most-reviewed boat at 6,076 reviews. The self-drive boat at Creek Harbour is $69 for a hull of up to five — cheaper per head than any dinner ticket. The mega yacht buffet is $82, the BBQ yacht party $99.
Three-hour superyacht slots run $126 with a swim stop and $126 for the DJ version. Private charters start at $131 for twelve guests and $134 for a 50-foot yacht. Read those per boat: absurd for two, cheaper than a shared superyacht for eight — and you keep the timing.

Dress & drink
What you may wear and whether a bar exists are set by the boat's licence and by the calendar, and neither is visible on a booking page.
Dress. Dinner cruises publish a smart-casual code and operators hold to it: trousers, a long skirt or dress, a collared shirt or proper top, closed shoes. Shorts, very short skirts and flip-flops get refused — at the gangway, not at booking. Daytime boats invert this: the speedboat run and the superyacht swim stop expect swimwear plus a cover-up for the promenade.
Alcohol. A boat serves alcohol only if it holds a licence, and that splits along the same line as the two waterfronts. Most standard Creek dhow cruises are dry — soft drinks, tea and coffee with the buffet — and several operators say so on their own sites. The licensed drinking is on the Marina and Canal boats: the dinner cruise with an open bar, the superyacht, the yacht party and its DJ sibling each name a bar in the listing, the only reliable place to check. Nobody under eighteen is served.
Ramadan. Daytime cruising continues, but alcohol service and live entertainment are commonly suspended or held until after sunset, and dinner cruises reshape around iftar. Tourists need not fast, but a boat with a band and an open bar at four in the afternoon is not what runs during the month.
Season
Sea temperatures are the long-term monthly averages published by Climates to Travel. Dubai is the rare port where the sea is never too cold and often too hot — June to September the Gulf is one of the warmest seas on earth, and a swim stop cools nobody.
Rain almost never cancels a boat here. The wind does, and it has a name: the shamal, a northwesterly blowing the length of the Gulf. The winter version, November to February, is intermittent but heavy — events last a day and a half to five days at twenty to forty knots, raising steep seas and carrying dust that drops visibility to nothing. February to April is the reliably windy stretch, exactly when a still photograph of the Burj Al Arab from a speedboat is least likely.
The rule inverts most Mediterranean harbours: here the enemy is heat. October to April, take any slot; May to September, take the evening departure. Enclosed dinner boats run all summer because they are air-conditioned — the open speedboats and abra-style cruises are what becomes an endurance test.

Dubai charges no marine-park entry, no harbour tax and no port fee to board a tour boat — a real difference from most ports here. What costs money is transport, and one item catches people who assume a bank card works everywhere.
